Getting Around

To use public transport you will need to buy a Myki card and choose the amount of credit to put on it. To find where you can purchase a Myki card got o the PVT website here.

If you are an international student you may be eligible for a 50% reduction in fares, with an iUsepass, if your education institution is a participant to the program. Read more here.

In regional Victoria, train services are provided by V/Line. Visit the V/Line website to see timetables and book tickets.

If you are travelling in Melbourne, tram travel is free in Melbourne’s central business district and inner city.  Signs on the tram stops to tell you where the free tram zone begins and ends and most tram drivers  announce when you are entering or leaving the free tram zone.

Cycling is an option for those who want to save some money and keep themselves fit at the same time. Geelong has bike lanes in the city, but you need to be aware of the road rules for bicycles. Read more here.

If you have an overseas drivers licence from a Recognised Country or a country where driving experience is recognised you do not need to take a test in Victoria. If your licence is from any other country you will need to take the following tests:

  • Road Law Knowledge Test
  • Hazard Perception Test
  • Drive Test

 On some occasions, at night, in bad weather or if public transport is not available, you may want to take a taxi or ride sharing, such as Uber.

For taxis you can make a phone booking, wait at a taxi rank or hail a taxi from the roadside. Taxi fares vary depending on the time of day or if it is a public holiday and also if you have luggage. Sometimes at night you will be asked to pre-pay the fare.
